April 2001
A group of Church of God members realized that we were all living in the Indianapolis area and decided to join together for Bible Study. We began meeting for Bible Study on a weekly basis, rotating between our homes. We studied a variety of topics that brought us closer together as a group, and welcomed others who moved to the Indianpolis area. Although we discussed how to reach others, little effort was made to expand outside of the weekly Bible Study.
August 2004
Many of us were feeling God working in our lives and telling us that we needed to move on to the next step. When we heard that a Church of God pastor was looking at moving to the Indianapolis area, we met with him to discuss what possibilities God might have in store for us. We decided that we should start making the effort to plant a church somewhere in the Indianapolis area. We continued meeting with our weekly Bible Study.
January 2005
To better prepare ourselves for the task of planting a church, we visited numerous churches throughout the greater Indianapolis area. We paid close attention to how churches greeted newcomers, what efforts were made to welcome visitors, and what seemed to draw people to various churches. Our plan was to begin a church on the west side of Indianapolis, in which the weekly home-based Bible studies/small groups would culminate in a weekly worship service.
April 2005
We decided that although we were not ready to start having full-blown church services, we did want to start having weekly worship services teaching our beliefs. We began meeting at our pastor's house on Sunday evenings, to allow those who were traveling or wished to attend another church in the morning that flexibiliy. We also began looking closer at the formal establishment of a church, which included application to our state and general conferences and how we wanted our church to be organized. Committees were established to review other church constitutions, to define our beliefs and doctrine, and to generate a governing document for our church body.
August 13, 2006
Our first Sunday morning worship service in our current location was held. We committed ourselves to inviting and encouraging others to join us. Within the next year, our group grew to include some people from Bloomington, Lafayette, Terre Haute, and Knightstown who were excited to find a new church body within reasonable driving distance to their homes. The varied home locations did make for difficulties in conducting weekday home-based Bible studies or small groups. Although this did not fit our initial vision for the church, we agreed to allow God to continue shaping us as He desired. We attempted a few outreach activities, such as mailings and going door to door in local neighborhoods to grow our church body.
Currently
We are looking at different possibilities of growth now. Most of our ideas are focused on providing a service or ministry to the local community, with the hope that some people will be drawn to us. We hope that since we have been faithful and willing, God will continue to bless us in our endeavors. We are preparing for that eventuality in our planning of future activies and growth.
